You may use "%" in place of any single character or an arbitrary number of characters in the search box to fill the beginning, middle or the rest of your search term.
The suggestions provide a search to a very quick and direct hit for queries which have already been found in the database. If you don't see what you are looking for in the suggestion drop down, the results will most likely be very wide.
extended search - Message appears when the system could not directly find the search term and automatically refined it for a wider, more likely to find results, search expression.
try alternative search - Message appears when the system could not find any results. The suggestions for other searches are then displayed below.
Limit of # reached! Please narrow your search. - Message appears when the system found more than the maximum allowed number of song lyrics per search query. To try to limit the bandwidth needs and save our users the time to dig through too many results, we force the search terms to be more descriptive.
System
Lyricsfly.com is using a slightly modified java script engine from the brilliantly crafted Google Suggest project, along with some PHP code to serve suggestions as text is being typed into the input field. The requested text is then withdrawn from a MySQL database of currently 597,026 song titles. Most, but not all artists, albums or songs are included in the suggest code and there may be some duplicates. However, we are always working on improving searching and suggesting ability of the site and we encourage users to submit lyrics which cannot be found in our database. All lyrics come from user contributions and may not always be accurate. Forms to correct lyrics are included with each song title.
Lyrics text search
To save time and gain accuracy for real-time suggestions, this section uses a special "learning" algorithm. The system actually records the text you have typed immediately after every successful query, and will suggest and display the number of results the very next time you type the same string of text. This way, we don't have to index millions of word phrases from within the lyric lines, and at the same time, serve those which our users are actually looking for.
Popups
Lyricsfly is popup free and will continue to be free from pop-up ads of any kind. We feel that this type of "forced advertising" is another form of spam which we are annoyed with. If you see popup windows while using our site it may be that you have visited another site which had so called pop-under ads. When you visit lyricsfly afterwards, the pop-under ads may appear. If you have installed some free programs, especially music-sharing programs, it is possible that they may have installed other programs as well which show ads at random intervals or based on anything you type on a web page. In any case, if you are seeing popup ads while using lyricsfly.com rest assured, they are not coming from us. We do not condone this practice and do not allow it on lyricsfly.
